More Than Meets the Eye: The Purpose and Function of Music Therapy Services in Critical Care

For generations, music has been used as part of treatment in healthcare. Music therapy was standardized as a clinical therapy in the mid 1940’s. Today, there are nearly 10,000 Board Certified Music Therapists (MT-BCs) across the United States, of which many are working in medicine. The audience will be engaged interactively as they grow their knowledge of music therapy and its evidence-based function in critical care and how it differentiates from supportive music.

Like other therapy modalities, the purpose of music therapy is to address function-based treatment goals of patients. Board Certified Music Therapists (MT-BCs) are nationally accredited clinicians, highly trained in musicianship and the science of music, human sciences including counseling, and clinical practice. By joining each of these elements together with the therapeutic partnership between MT-BC and patient, the achievement of treatment goals is achieved (Golino, et al., 2019). As an interdisciplinary approach is paramount in healthcare, MT-BCs work in tandem with other professionals on the medical team. From improving delirium and anxiety for optimized patient participation in care and decreasing pain perception during procedures, to increasing motivation and tolerance of early mobility and gait training, music therapists frequently co-treat in planned and spontaneous circumstances. These are just a few examples of how patients are integrated into their treatment, maximizing opportunities for empowerment and autonomy (Lowey, 2019). Additionally, MT-BCs serve as champions for interdisciplinary colleagues’ use of music to support patients and consult regularly with teams on how they can implement it safely and effectively.
