This workshop goes beyond the basics of defining asexuality, offering mental health professionals a deeper understanding of compulsory sexuality and its impact on both asexual and allosexual clients. Through the presenter’s lived experience as an asexual person and clinical expertise, we will explore the challenges and growth opportunities in asexual identity development, common fears among ace clients, and strategies for challenging acephobia—both external and internalized. Participants will gain tools to better support asexual clients in therapy while also examining how compulsory sexuality shapes all clients’ experiences of consent, desire, and autonomy. Through case examples, discussion, and practical interventions, this session will equip clinicians to help clients navigate their sexual and erotic lives with greater self-determination. Attendees will leave with a stronger foundation for addressing asexuality in clinical work, supporting ace community-building, and fostering a more inclusive, affirming practice.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this course, learners will be able to: Identify the ways compulsory sexuality shapes both asexual and allosexual clients' experiences of consent, desire, and autonomy in therapeutic settings. Implement strategies for challenging acephobia, supporting asexual identity development, and fostering community-building for ace clients. Formulate non-pathologizing case conceptualizations of asexual clients accounting for the intersections of ace identity and biopsychosocial factors
