Albany, NY – January 8, 2026 - The New York Mental Health Counselors Association (NYMHCA), representing the thousands of Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) across New York State, proudly announces its strong support for Governor Kathy Hochul’s latest State of the State proposals aimed at combating the youth mental health crisis and regulating the digital landscape for children.

As primary providers of mental health services in schools, private practices, and community clinics, LMHCs see firsthand the devastating impact of unregulated social media design and the lack of early intervention resources. Governor Hochul’s "Protecting Our Kids" legislative package represents a vital, proactive step toward safeguarding the emotional and psychological well-being of the next generation.

Strengthening the Safety Net through Peer Support
NYMHCA specifically celebrates the statewide expansion of Teen Mental Health First Aid for 10th graders.

"In the clinical world, we know that early intervention is the key to preventing long-term crises," said Steven Perdek, LMHC-D, President of NYMHCA. "By equipping 180,000 students annually with the skills to identify distress in their peers, New York is creating a vital bridge to professional care. Our members stand ready to support these students as they transition from peer-to-peer support to the clinical expertise provided by licensed counselors."

Addressing Digital Trauma at the Source
The proposed restrictions on "addictive feeds," harmful AI chatbots, and the "Privacy by Default" mandates address the digital determinants of mental health. Current clinical research consistently links predatory online design to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia among adolescents. By holding platforms accountable, the State is reducing the environmental triggers that contribute to the current surge in youth mental health challenges.

Expanding Access via School-Based Clinics
NYMHCA further commends the Governor’s continued investment in school-based mental health clinics. Reaching the milestone of 1,300 sites ensures that mental health care is integrated into the fabric of a child’s daily life, removing barriers such as transportation and stigma.

A Call for Continued Workforce Support
While NYMHCA enthusiastically supports these measures, the association notes that increased awareness and screening will lead to a higher demand for professional services.

"Governor Hochul has set a national standard for youth protection," continued Perdek. "To ensure the success of these initiatives, NYMHCA looks forward to continuing our partnership with the State to bolster the mental health workforce, ensuring that every teen identified through these programs has immediate access to a Licensed Mental Health Counselor."
