NYMHCA Supports Funding for Community Colleges to Prepare to Meet Student Mental Health Needs

The New York Mental Health Counselors Association (NYMHCA) enthusiastically supports Governor Kathy Hochul and SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. for their visionary leadership in securing $100,000 annually for each SUNY campus to enhance mental health services for students as part of the 2025 budget. This substantial investment underscores a critical commitment to the mental health and well-being of our student population across New York State.

As mental health professionals, we understand the significant challenges faced by students today. The pressures of academic performance, social integration, and the transition to adulthood are compounded by the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising prevalence of mental health issues among young people. By allocating these essential funds, Governor Hochul and Chancellor King are proactively addressing the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support within the SUNY system.

The additional funding will enable SUNY campuses to expand their mental health services, ensuring that students have timely access to counseling, wellness initiatives embedded in workforce development programming, and other critical support mechanisms. This initiative will also facilitate the hiring of more mental health professionals, reduce wait times, and enhance the overall quality of care provided to students. Importantly, it acknowledges the diverse needs of the student body and aims to create an inclusive, supportive environment where all students can thrive while destigmatizing seeking mental health support.

Governor Hochul and Chancellor King’s commitment to mental health reflects a deep understanding of the integral role that mental well-being plays in academic success and overall quality of life. Their efforts will not only help mitigate the current mental health crisis but also set a standard for other states and institutions to follow.

The New York Mental Health Counselors Association is grateful for their dedication to this vital cause. We look forward to the positive impact this funding will have on the lives of SUNY students and the broader community. We stand ready to support and collaborate with SUNY campuses in implementing these enhanced mental health services, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed in a supportive and nurturing environment.
