NYMHCA Joins Forces to Oppose Bill that Would Restrict LMHCs from Marketing their Certifications

Friday, May 17, 2024

The New York Mental Health Counselors Association has joined 18 other organizations to oppose a bill currently in the NYS Legislature (A.10009 / S.9214) that would enact the "Health Care Professional Transparency Act." The name implies the law would be beneficial but, in fact, it's not.

"This bill is a blatant attempt to undermine public confidence in the qualification and expertise of tens of thousands of non-physician health providers who are called upon to provide the delivery of and access to health care for millions of New Yorkers. This is a misguided attempt by proponents of the legislation to diminish the services provided by vital health care professionals and to restore a 1950’s era health system that cannot serve the needs of a modern patient population" stated in the memorandum opposition.

The bill is currently scheduled to be read and reviewed in the Senate Committee on Higher Education on Tuesday, May 21st, followed by the Committee on Finance.
