Mental Health Counselors and K-12 Schools often work side by side to support the mental health needs of students. This presentation aims to bridge the two entities by providing Mental Health Counselors with an overview of the connection and process between a mental health diagnosis and school based supports and accommodations in the K-12 setting. An overview of the educational evaluation process will be discussed, moving into several case studies for illustrative purposes. The presentation will culminate in suggestions for engaging with schools and for writing a diagnostic letter to inform school supports. Participants will gain an understanding of the difference between DSM-5-TR diagnoses and NYS educational identifications, become familiar with educational accommodations and their purpose in the school setting, and understand the process by which K-12 students are evaluated for educational accommodations. The presenter is a licensed mental health counselor and certified school psychologist in New York State with experience in both the school setting and private practice
