The workshop begins with an exploration of the purpose and goals of clinical supervision, including the dual roles of gatekeeping and mentoring. Participants will examine supervision as a distinct professional competency, with emphasis on how it differs from therapy and administrative oversight. A review of evidence-based supervision models—such as developmental, integrative, and discrimination models—will be provided to help attendees conceptualize and structure their supervisory approach.
A key focus will be on ethical and legal responsibilities in supervision. Participants will be guided through relevant sections of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, NASW Code of Ethics, and APA Ethical Principles, with special attention to confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, dual relationships, and documentation. Participants will analyze real-world scenarios and apply ethical decision-making models to address common supervision dilemmas.
Further, attendees will learn core supervision skills, such as giving constructive feedback, conducting formal evaluations, and the supervision parallel process. Professional development challenges will be addressed.. Emphasis will be placed on creating a safe, structured environment that promotes learning, accountability, and clinical excellence.
Throughout the workshop, participants will engage in discussions and case conceptualization designed to build confidence and competence in supervisory practice. Development of an individual Supervision Informed Consent will be included in the workshop. This workshop qualifies for the continuing education requirements for the Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) certification from the Center for Credentialing & Education requirements and renewal.
